What is Search Engine Optimization, and how can it help your business bring in more sales and more profits?
Online, there are billions of web pages. If someone decides to search for a word or phrase that relates to your product, you want them to see your listing. But how do you get yours to the top?
The problem is that Google and the rest of the Search Engines want the most relevant pages to be given Top 10 priority. These top 10 results display on the Search Engine results pages, and get the lion’s share of the clicks. Think about it … how often do you really look on the second or third page of Google to find what you’re looking for?
To get to the top, your website has to be a well-oiled machine. The Search Engines reward websites that promote user experience. This means that if users go to your site and stay on, the Search Engines like you.
Cory Weber: Page 10 to Page 1
One big problem that a lot of website owners face is that they build a website that the Search Engine robots can’t read. Remember, when Google looks at your page, they don’t actually have a real person checking it out and reporting on what the content is about (at least not 99% of the time). What they all use is a specially designed robot that scans the website code and gives some good guesses to what the page is about.
This means that a website that is all images would be worth nothing to the robots. They can’t read and understand them, therefore they don’t know what they’re all about.
But there's good news!
There are certain things you can do on your website to help the Search Engine robots tell exactly what your page is about. From putting your keywords in header tags, to naming the page something that has to do with the content, the Search Engines reward a website that makes their job easy.
There is also a list of off-page optimization techniques that can help the Search Engines know exactly what your website is about. The biggest of these is direct, one-way links from other websites in your industry. If you’re a computer repair company and you have a link coming from PC Magazine, the Search Engines get a good idea of what you’re about. Also, the more reputable of a website that links to you, the more that link is worth.
All of these things, plus a ton of other variables enter into the complex algorithms the Search Engines use to rank websites. Ann Arbor Marketing is happy to help you with your Search Engine Optimization needs, including analyzing a keyword to see if it’s possible to rank in the Top 10.
